A BIG shout-out to Josh Douglas of A Painter's Touch. He just finished painting the exterior of my house, and I am so pleased. He is neat, thorough, very fair in his pricing, and HONEST.
It took a couple days to get the house primed. When that was done, it was time for our paint party! We had some people over and painted colors, whites, trims, and doors. You can see the color choices here. The walls were painted a semi-gloss paramount white and the trim was gloss ultra white. Choosing two different sheens gives contrast and a bit more depth. The semi-gloss and gloss painted walls are also easier to clean compared to flat paint.
A disk sander takes off the most material the fastest, but can also leave swirl marks. Use a disk sander if you want to get down to the original wood in a hurry. A random-orbit sander is a more subtle, controlled choice.
Scrape from all directions to ensure getting all of the loose paint. Hold the scraper flat—with two hands, if necessary—so you don’t gouge the wood.
Before painting aluminum, apply primer. If aluminum siding is in good shape, you can use a latex metal primer. However, if the surface is oxidized, do not use a latex primer: A typical ingredient of latex is ammonia, which can have a negative reaction with the oxidation.
