First, we worked to remove all wallpaper throughout the house. There was a wallpaper border in a couple rooms, so it wasn’t too big of a deal taking it off. I basically scored the paper, wet it, then scraped it off. We did a more in-depth post last year. The main thing to keep in mind when removing wallpaper is to score well, then soak soak soak. The longer you let the paper soak up the removal spray or water, the easier it will peel off! Don’t paint over the wallpaper. Like most short cuts in home repair, it will lead to more problems down the road. Which I ran into in this house. In the dining room, I was removing the wallpaper when I realized somebody had previously painted over wallpaper. In the entire room! Which leads me to the second thing we did.

For acrylic latex paint or other water-based finishes, choose brushes with synthetic bristles—either polyester or nylon. Natural bristles lose their integrity when they soak-up water from water-based paints. Brushes made from polyester keep their shape when wet and remain firm when you paint on a hot day. Brushes made with nylon last longer, but tend to become limp on hot days.
You will also want to ensure that you paint at a period when there are no major fluctuations of temperature from day to night. Major temperature fluctuations cause the paint to react and thus prevent it from curing properly. This means you will have unevenly painted surfaces with peels and cracks.
Also, if you are in an area that experiences intense storms and harsh winters, your paint job will likely age out more quickly.
