Awesome post! I just wanted to add a couple tips about cleaning brushes that might be helpful. If you’re painting and are coming back for second coats later the same day, you can put your brush in a ziplock bag to keep it from drying out while you’re taking a break. When cleaning your brushes, use Murphy Oil Soap, it really helps to get the paint off and is eco friendly. You can even soak brushes in it and clean them later on if you’re a giant procrastinator like I am 🙂 I love following your progress with this house and am so stoked to see the finished product! The solvent in paint keeps it liquid and spreadable until it dries on your wall or trim. Latex painting dries more quickly because its solvent is water. The solvent in oil-based paints is mineral spirits, which takes more time to evaporate. Once the paint is applied, the solvent evaporates, and the resin allows the paint to adhere to the surface. Various additives in paint give it desirable characteristics, like moisture and scrub resistance.

I’ve been painting homes for over 15 years and I think you’ve nailed it: PREPPING. Most DIY’ers and home owners have little to no knowledge about the amount of time and cost it takes to prepare a project prior to painting. Your Article did a Great job in explaining some of the procedures that are necessary for a truly professional paint job. All to often the prepping is weak or non existing. As you pointed out, covering badly stained walls or ceilings with a coat of Kiln is probably not enough. Just wondering how many hours were spent in the prepping of your project?     When the painters arrived, they reviewed everything again to make sure they were painting the right things. Then they powerwashed and carefully masked everything off, also carefully moving furniture. They painted everything so nicely, I am very satisfied. There were frequent check-ins with me about how the service was going and clear communication about payment.

    We had a terrible experience with a previous local paint company so we decided to go with Kelly Brothers Painting for our next project. The first time we had Justo and his team they were amazing. They painted our house exterior. We were so happy we used them again to paint our commercial building. That was not an easy job but again Justo and his team came through. We have had so many compliments on both our home and our building. We called again for some interior paint work and Miguel was our foreman. Again I was very satisfied, so much so that we continued with more interior work. Each team that has come out has been superior. They pay close attention to details.
